In the morning I carry the soup to Köln (Cologne). There is a little time left, to visit the city centre. I am overwhelmed by the Cologne Cathedral. The dome which had been started to built at the 13th century and was finished in the year 1880 seems to be a wonder of an unknown world, because of its bizarrely gothic outer surface. In the middle of an esplanade this monumental colossus arises in the city centre, contrasting to the neighbouring main station in a most peculiar way. When leaving the churchs' door, you virtually enter the stations'door at the same time - or vice versa, depends on where you are headed.
I haven't seen such a central density and nearness of traffic junction, ecclesiastical architecture, hotel- and museum buildings in any other city. Oddly enough, all those buildings can be seen as metaphors for travelling: the travel by train from one geografic point to another,
the spiritual journey to the world of life and afterlife inside the dome, the stay at the hotel, to recover from strain and stress of travelling and the journey into the past at the museum.
However, it should be considered, that the idea of museums as a place of collected items not to be lost, is going to overtake itself. p.e. The k21 museum of modern art in Düsseldorf is actually designed for preservation of art works of the 21th century for the next 92 years, but we dont know yet, if it will be ever worth not to forget them.
In the afternoon I bring the soup to Andrea, as agreed. She lives in Kalk, one of the suburbs of Köln and has been blind since birth, consequently that needs great effort in things, like shopping or soup transportation. Nontheless, right from the beginning she has offered to care for any transports if needed. My meeting with her is definitely cordial and shows me that she's a very enthusiastic jahressuppe cook.
We agree, that I will be back tomorrow and help to fill in the half litre and to pick up the soup for passing on.
